The Cincinnati Bengals beat the spread, won their game and became kings of the AFC North on Sunday.
And a Caesars Sportsbook bettor in Michigan made more on that game than quarterback Joe Burrow did.
That’s all thanks to a 20-to-1 odds bet wagered online in September, according to Caesars, one of the rising brands on the Michigan sportsbooks scene.
Big bet nets big win for Michigan online sports bettor
On Sept. 16, the lucky (psychic?) bettor placed $20,000 on the guys in orange and black to win their division with +2000 odds from Caesars.
The bettor, whose identity name was not disclosed by Caesars, must have liked what they saw in Cincy’s Week 1 effort, a 24-20 overtime win over the Minnesota Vikings. At the time of the bet, the 1-0 Bengals were tied with Pittsburgh at the top of the division, while Cleveland and Baltimore dropped their openers.
More than three months later, Sunday’s 34-31 win over the Kansas City Chiefs clinched the title, therefore making that Michigan bettor $400,000 in profit
Burrow, the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2020, makes less than $140,000 per game.
Big payouts bite into monthly revenue
Caesars will gladly take a little publicity from the payout, as they tweeted the big win from their Twitter account on Sunday.
Plus, this is a large company that’s spending big on marketing. Besides, anyone who watches television has seen plenty of J.B. Smoove-as-Caesar these days. And the Manning family doesn’t come cheap.
Even in Michigan, where things started small for William Hill Sportsbook before the Caesars takeover, Caesars has added more revenue each month since online sports betting went live in January.
While December numbers have not been released yet, a review of recent months shows that a $400K payout could really chomp into the brand’s revenue.
Michigan sports betting revenue for Caesars from August, September, October and November was, respectively: $162,383, $596,928, $1.04 million and $3.47 million.
If the person who placed that bet had won in August, the Caesars revenue would have dipped into the red by nearly $250,000.
Again, not huge numbers for a huge company, but certainly not a rounding error.
