Betting on the Detroit Lions preseason

As hard as it may be to believe, Detroit is entering the season as the talk of the NFL. A lot of that has to do with the Lions appearance on HBO’s Hard Knocks. But there was some optimism surrounding the team before that, as well.

Friday night’s preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons is the first opportunity for the Lions to add to — or deflate — that optimism. It kicks off at 6 p.m. at Ford Field.

Caesars lists the Lions as a 2.5-point favorite as of early Friday afternoon, which was a big move from earlier in the morning when the game was listed as a pick ’em.

Atlanta is +120 on the moneyline, while the Lions are -140, and the total is listed at 35.5.

Of course, betting on the NFL preseason can be tricky. Teams aren’t playing their best players for much of the game, if at all. So putting money on backups, and their backups, in an exhibition is risky.

Still, it’s your first opportunity to bet on the Lions this season.

NFL preseason odds for Friday, Aug. 12

Four other games will take place Friday night.

Cleveland travels to Jacksonville, where the Jaguars will be playing their second preseason game. They’re a 1.5-point favorite at Caesars, and are -130 on the moneyline. The Browns were +110 on the moneyline, and the total sits at 36. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Arizona plays at defending AFC champion Cincinnati at 7:30 p.m. The Bengals are a 1.5-point favorite as of Friday afternoon, and sit at -135 on the moneyline, while Arizona is +115. The total is 31, which tells you how much oddsmakers expect to see of young star quarterbacks Kyler Murray and Joe Burrow.

The New York Jets travel to Philadelphia in a game Caesars lists as pick ’em. Both teams are -110 on the moneyline, and the total sits at 35.5 for the game, which also kicks off at 7:30 p.m.

Green Bay plays at San Francisco in a playoff rematch from a year ago. The 49ers are a 2.5-point favorite and -145 on the moneyline. The Packer are +125, and the total is 35.5. The game is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. start.
