There has been heavy scrutiny regarding college prop betting across the country. Michigan is one of five states that does not restrict prop betting in any way. The Michigan Gaming Control Board told PlayMichigan recently that it is still “collecting feedback from various stakeholders” regarding a ruling.
MGCB Public Information Officer, Lisa Keith, continued, via email:
“As of now, no decision has yet been made by the MGCB. We place a high value on gathering input from all relevant parties before reaching a conclusion.”
College football starts in exactly one month from today with a four-game Week 0 slate. Should the status quo remain, Michigan online sportsbooks will still be able to offer props.
There’s still time for MGCB to ban college props
Football and basketball are the biggest sports in terms of college betting. The MGCB has exactly a month to either ban props or allow them before the first slate of games on August 24.
NCAA President, Charlie Baker, issued a statement, during March Madness, urging lawmakers across the country to ban college prop betting.
“Sports betting issues are on the rise across the country with prop bets continuing to threaten the integrity of competitions and leading to student-athletes and professional athletes getting harassed,” Baker said. “The NCAA has been working with states to deal with these threats and many are responding by banning college prop bets.
Some states opted to ban props, including Ohio, Vermont and Maryland. Michigan is not one of them, yet. Keith told PlayMichigan back in March that it would “take a look” at the issue.
As it is still gathering more information, the MGCB has not taken a stance one way or another. It wouldn’t be surprising if it allowed prop bets on college games come August.
Michigan allows in-game prop wagering, too
As previously mentioned, the Great Lakes State is one of five states that allows live betting props, as well as props on Michigan teams. Others include:
- Kansas
- North Carolina
- Washington D.C.
- Wyoming
There are several other markets that allow college prop wagering. However, for example, New Jersey offers college prop betting, but not for in-state teams.
There are no restrictions in the Great Lakes State, as bettors can bet on their favorite players, before and during the game.
Michigan sportsbooks do not have player props available for any games, yet, this season. Bettors are going to need to get used to a new Michigan team, as the defending national champs have a new head coach and quarterback.
