Michigan online casinos closed out a record year of revenue in December with a new monthly record as well.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board released December’s online casino revenue numbers on Thursday and Michigan closed the year with $181.4 million in combined revenue. That’s a 3.5% jump from November’s previous record-setting total of $175.3 million.

December’s record number pushed the state to $1.92 billion in online casino revenue for the year. That’s a 21.6% jump from 2022’s previous record of $1.58 billion.

Three takeaways from December Michigan online casino report

No slowing down Michigan online casinos

After a strong first nine months of 2023 for online casinos, we weren’t sure that they could continue to outpace 2022 at the same rate for Q4.

However, the state continued to prove that it has yet to hit its peak in the iGaming industry. With December’s record, Michigan put up $517 million in online casino revenue for the final three months of the year. That was a 17.7% jump from last year’s Q4 performance ($439.2 million).

The late surge pushed Michigan to $1.92 billion for all of 2023, a 21.6% jump from 2022’s record total.

It certainly shouldn’t be a surprise to see Michigan push past $2 billion in online casino revenue for 2024.

Five operators set new monthly records

While the top online casinos in Michigan continued to do their part to raise the monthly record, none of the big three (BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings) hit a new monthly record of their own.

That honor went to some of the secondary online casinos in the state.

Altogether, five different online operators put up a record month of online casino revenue in December.

Four of the five bested a record that had been previously set in November.

BetRivers Casino Michigan, Caesars Palace Michigan, Eagle Casino & Sports, and Play Gun Lake each set a record in December after having done so in November as well.

BetRivers led the way in this group with $11.5 million in revenue, while Caesars Palace/Caesars Sportsbook came in with $9.6 million. Eagle Casino had $3.2 million in revenue, while Play Gun Lake tallied $2.9 million.

The other record holder this month was Hollywood Casino, which held its first full month of operation in December. That led it to $6.4 million in revenue, which is over a 23% jump from the previous PENN Entertainment record in Michigan. That came in March 2022 through Barstool, when it recorded $5.2 million in revenue.

Taxes push toward $500 million in 2023

With the record year of revenue means record tax revenue for the state during the year.

Collectively, $486.6 million was collected in the year for iGaming tax revenue. That was up over $86 million from last year’s $400 million total.

In 2023, state tax revenue tallied $354 million through online casinos, while over $132 million went to city/local jurisdiction tax revenue.
