A new report from the American Gaming Association indicates that the casino gaming industry contributes $328.6 billion annually to the US economy.
Throughout the country, Michigan finds itself as a top-10 economic contributor in the study, responsible for an annual economic impact of $6.28 billion.
We know Michigan online casinos have been thriving, but its retail casinos continue to be one of the country leaders as well.
Michigan eighth in economic impact
Of all 50 states, Michigan sits eighth in overall economic impact, according to the AGA study.
State | Number of Casinos | Jobs Supported | Economic Impact |
---|---|---|---|
Nevada | 220 | 410,456 | $55.96 billion |
California | 85 | 124,274 | $19.96 billion |
Oklahoma | 142 | 75,885 | $9.80 billion |
Florida | 15 | 54,142 | $7.55 billion |
New York | 31 | 25,784 | $6.55 billion |
New Jersey | 9 | 39,007 | $6.45 billion |
Pennsylvania | 16 | 33,171 | $6.34 billion |
Michigan | 26 | 37,911 | $6.28 billion |
Louisiana | 24 | 40,919 | $6.13 billion |
Washington | 35 | 35,044 | $5.39 billion |
All States | 1,005 | 1.8 million | $328.6 billion |
The Michigan gambling statistics show that it is one of nine states that generates at least $6 billion in annual economic impact.
It would be hard for Michigan to compete against the likes of Nevada, California and Oklahoma, which have significantly more retail casinos available.
Michigan online casinos continue to add value
Though the focus of this study is on retail gaming, Michigan is also thriving when it comes to its online casino impact.
It’s $1.24 billion in online casino revenue generated through the first eight months of 2023 is less than $1 million behind New Jersey for second place in the US. Pennsylvania is leading the way with $1.34 billion on the year.
The online casino industry has also led Michigan to becoming the fastest state to reach $1 billion in tax revenue for the state.
Michigan was able to do that in 32 months from Jan. 22, 2021. Pennsylvania took 36 months to reach that mark.
In 2023 alone, online casinos in Michigan have generated $310.4 million in tax revenue for state and local entities.
