Detroit Lions Vs. New England Patriots NFL Week 5 Odds At Michigan Sportsbooks

Written By Drew Ellis on October 2, 2022 - Last Updated on October 7, 2022

The Detroit Lions added to their laundry list of “surprising ways to lose” on Sunday.

Putting up 45 points wasn’t enough in a 48-45 loss against the Seattle Seahawks at home.

Sitting at 1-3 on the young season, the Lions hope to get some momentum in Week 5 before entering the bye week. They will hit the road to face a beat-up New England Patriots team.

After the letdown at home, what do oddsmakers think of the Lions on the road? Should Michigan sports bettors expect a rebound effort?

Lions vs. Patriots NFL Week 5 Odds

The Detroit Lions will seek their first road win of the season when they face the New England Patriots in Week 5.

The Detroit Lions odds for Week 5 list them as a 3-to-3.5-point underdog on the road.

The over/under total is listed at 45.5 points right now at most sportsbooks. Detroit’s lowest total on the season thus far has been 52 points at Minnesota.

Detroit Lions betting trends

For the first time in the 2022 NFL season, the Detroit Lions failed to cover the spread. They were slight favorites against the Seahawks, only to lose to fall to 1-3 overall and 3-1 ATS.

Detroit is now 14-7 against the spread in its last 21 games.

The New England Patriots fell to 1-3 on the season on Sunday as well. They lost 27-24 in OT at Green Bay. New England did get its first win ATS on Sunday, as it was a 10-point underdog. The Pats are 1-2-1 ATS on the season.

Lions vs. Patriots history

These two teams have met 12 times in their history. New England holds a 7-5 record against the Lions.

Their last meeting was actually a 26-10 win for the Lions at home on Sunday Night Football in 2018.

NFL Week 5 Prop Odds: TJ Hockenson receiving yards

The Detroit Lions maintained their high-powered offense in Week 4 despite being without D’Andre Swift, Amon-Ra St. Brown and DJ Chark.

Needing someone to step up in the pass game, tight end T.J. Hockenson was the one to answer the call.

The fourth-year tight end from Iowa put up a career-high of 179 receiving yards on eight receptions. He also pulled in a pair of touchdowns.

Sunday marked the first time since his NFL debut that Hockenson had more than 100 receiving yards.

Including in Sunday’s win was also a career-long 81-yard reception.

In Week 5, the Lions top-ranked scoring offense meets up with a New England defense that is giving up 314.7 yards per game. That includes 200 passing yards per contest.

Should St. Brown and Chark continue to miss time with injuries, Hockenson is likely to see a bigger role in the offense again this week.

“The opportunity is there for tight end T.J. Hockenson to have another solid performance this week,” said John Maakaron of All Lions. “The young tight end wants to be more involved in the offense and the team now is in a position to need him to produce. I expect him to record over 85 yards receiving with one touchdown on the road against the Patriots.”

Currently, there are no prop odds available for Hockenson’s receiving yards in Week 5. Check back during the week for an update look at his prop odds.

NFL Week 5 Prop Odds: New England’s passing yards

The Patriots find themselves dealing with some pretty key injuries as well. Especially when it comes to the quarterback position.

Typical starter Mac Jones missed the Week-4 game in Green Bay due to a high-ankle sprain. Brian Hoyer got the start against the Packers, but left the game in the first quarter with a head injury.

That forced rookie Bailey Zappe onto the field. Zappe was 10 of 15 passing for 99 yards and a score.

It’s unclear just who will end up under center for the Patriots at home in Week 5. But, whomever it is, they will have an opportunity to put up big numbers.

The Lions have the 32nd-ranked defense when it comes to total yards (444.8 ypg) and 30th in pass defense (279.3 ypg).

Hoyer was placed on the IR this week, while Jones has been limited in practice. That leaves the door option for Jones to return, otherwise we could see Zappe make his first start.

“The Lions’ are fully aware the Patriots’ are going to try and run the football at a heavy clip. With the film the last couple of weeks indicating Detroit is struggling mightily defensively, look for the Patriots to rush the football over 20 times Sunday,” said Maakaron. “I would expect the Patriots to have less than 250 yards passing overall on Sunday, as Bailey Zappe continues to develop during his rookie NFL season.”

Geno Smith threw for 320 yards and two scores against the Lions in Week 4.

Currently, there are no prop odds available when it comes to passing yards for the New England quarterback. Check back during the week for an update.
