The successful opening of the new Crystal Shores Casino could heighten competition in the northwestern Lower Peninsula, with Little River Casino Resort being the most likely property to feel the pinch. Still, despite having been unable to open a second property of its own, Little River is taking a friendly stance toward its new neighbor.
The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB) opened the new property on Jan. 25, after a slight delay because of inclement weather. It is a smaller facility, inside a government building owned by the tribe, with 70 slot machines.
Crystal Shores Casino is a temporary location, with bigger plans to follow for GTB.
New casino in close proximity to Little River
Crystal Shores Casino opened on 7282 Hoadley Road in Benzonia, which is couple of towns north of Manistee, where Little Rivers Casino Resort resides.
The newest property just opened and only has 70 slot machines. The facility is also closed on Monday and Tuesday. Despite those facts, Johnny Barrientoz, CEO of Grand Traverse Resort and Casinos, does have bigger plans on the horizon.
As it stands now, Crystal Shores Casino is roughly 35 miles from Little River Casino Resort, which is around a 45-minute drive. According to News Advocate Mainstee, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Ogema, Larry Romanelli, is not afraid of the competition:
“We have not opposed that casino to the north of us in Benzie County for a second. Obviously, we wish them luck. We will just keep doing what we’re doing.”
Little Rivers Casino Resort is a massive property with more than 1,400 slots and dozens of table games. In addition, the property offers tons of amenities and entertainment including a hotel, spa and salon, golf course, concerts and multiple dining options.
Little River Band’s bid for a second casino appears to have failed despite a 14-year effort. However, Manistee County Tourism Authority executive director, Sammie Lukaskiewicz, called the current facility a ‘world-class destination.”
