How to play the Mega Millions
Michigan is one of 47 localities that offers the Mega Millions, as tickets can be purchased in 45 states, as well as the Washington D.C. and the US Virgin Islands.
Tickets can be purchased at any of the more than 10,000 lottery retailers around the state. They can also be purchased at the Michigan Lottery website, or on the Michigan Lotto app.
Mega Millions tickets are $2, and a Megaplier can be added to any ticket for another $1. The Megaplier would multiply any prize, outside of the jackpot, by the number drawn for that night’s multiplier, either 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x.
If buying tickets online through the Michigan Lottery, you’ll need to purchase at least two and a Megaplier to meet the $5 minimum purchase, or three regular tickets.
Mega Millions jackpot is sixth over $1 billion
Odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350. This is true whether the jackpot is $20 million or $1 billion, and regardless of how many people have purchased tickets.
So, knowing that, it’s not too surprising that enough drawings took place in 2022 without a winner to elevate jackpots to record levels — twice.
The Mega Millions reached $1.337 billion in late July before being won by a single ticket purchased in Illinois.
Powerball saw its jackpot rise to a US lottery record of $2.04 billion by early November. That, too, was one by a single ticket, this one sold in California.
This current run is the sixth time in US history a multi-state lottery jackpot has eclipsed $1 billion.
