The Mega Millions has eclipsed the $1 billion mark.
With no winner drawn Tuesday night, the Friday, July 29, drawing for the nationwide lottery game has an estimated jackpot of $1.28 billion, which would be the largest yet in 2022 and the second largest in the drawing’s history.
Playing the Mega Millions in Michigan
A Mega Millions ticket can be purchased for $2 through the Michigan Lottery. You can purchase one on the Michigan Lottery app, on the Michigan Lottery website or one of the state’s 10,500 lottery retailers. If you purchase tickets online, you must buy at least three to meet the site’s minimum purchase requirements.
Tickets must be purchased by 10:45 p.m. ET the night of the drawing, and drawings are held at 11 p.m. ET every Tuesday and Friday.
Lotto players can also add a “Megaplier” to their ticket for $1. That will multiply non-jackpot prizes by up to five times.
Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
What is the Mega Millions cash payout?
If you win the Mega Millions, you can choose to receive a one-time cash option or an annual payment.
The cash option for the current jackpot is $747 million.
Those who choose the annuity option will receive 30 payments, with each payment being 5% bigger than the last.
How many Mega Millions tickets are bought in Michigan?
As of 3 p.m. on Friday, July 29, Michiganders have purchased 6 million tickets for the upcoming drawing. That’s according to the Michigan Lottery, which also noted that 2.3 million tickets had been purchased on Friday alone.

Friday’s jackpot is largest of 2022
A jackpot winner on Friday would be the largest of 2022, surpassing the $421 million winner from January. That winning ticket was purchased in California.
The last Mega Millions jackpot winner came in April, when a Tennessee player won $20 million.
Michigan was home to a big Mega Millions winner about 18 months ago, as an Oakland County lottery club won the $1.05 billion jackpot in January 2021.
That was the largest jackpot ever won in Michigan, and third largest in US lottery history.
Michigan Lottery coming off record year
All profits from the Michigan Lottery go to the Michigan School Aid Fund. The $1.419 billion contribution made for Fiscal Year 2021 was an all-time record. It was the seventh straight year the Michigan Lottery has made a record contribution to the School Aid Fund.
In total, the Michigan Lottery has contributed more than $26 billion to Michigan public schools since 1972.
