Louis Theros, the former vice president of the MGM Grand Detroit has been promoted to president of MGM Springfield in Massachusetts.

A former executive at MGM Grand Detroit has been elevated to the position of president of MGM Springfield Casino & Resort in Springfield, MA.

Louis “Louie” Theros, who formerly served as vice president and legal counsel for MGM Grand Detroit, has assumed responsibility as the leader of one of the largest casinos in the commonwealth of Massachusetts, effective immediately.

In a statement revealing the decision to promote Theros (above), MGM spokesperson Beth Ward said, “Louie has been literally hitting the ground running” in his new position in Springfield. The casino is located about 90 miles from Boston, and is one of only three casinos that operate in Massachusetts.

Theros spent eight years at MGM Grand Detroit

Theros has been employed at MGM Grand Detroit since 2015.

He currently serves as Mayor of Gross Pointe Farms, a position he apparently will vacate given his transfer to the east coast.

Theros attended Grosse Pointe North High School, the University of Michigan, and received his law degree from Vanderbilt University Law School in Nashville, TN. He is a trustee for the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Foundation.

MGM Grand Detroit makes the most money of all Detroit casinos. It had an average monthly revenue of $49.5 million through September of 2023. That was prior to the start of the Detroit casino workers’ strike in October and November. MGM Grand Detroit was hit hardest by the strike, but its revenue still far exceeds that of its competitors the MotorCity Casino and the Hollywood Casino at Greektown.

BetMGM Casino Michigan is also the number one online casino in the state.

In terms of sports betting, BetMGM MI Sportsbook ranks third behind FanDuel MI Sportsbook and the DraftKings Michigan Sportsbook.

MGM Springfield the second-largest casino in Massachusetts

MGM Springfield is the second-largest casino in Massachusetts, with roughly 1,500 slot machines and 120 table games. It employs more than 600 people at the casino and resort. It’s owned and operated by MGM Resorts International. The company also has casino properties in Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, and many other states.

Theros replaces Chris Kelley, who is leaving the gaming industry to relocate to California for family reasons.

According to a report from MassLive, Theros has been in contact with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission to introduce himself in his key position. That body regulates gaming in the commonwealth, including casinos, retail sports betting, and online sports betting. Among those offerings is BetMGM Sportsbook.

While online casinos in Michigan are legal, they are not legal, yet, in Massachusetts.

However, Massachusetts does have online sportsbooks, and a strong casino industry. Beyond MGM Springfield, Massachusetts is also home to Encore Boston Harbor Casino and Plainridge Park Casino.
