Revenue from Michigan online casinos topped $1 billion on the year thanks to a June total of $183.2 million in numbers released today by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
It’s the fastest the sector has hit the billion-dollar mark since iGaming was launched in Michigan in January of 2021. Online casinos had already established a new six-month record for total revenue by the end of May.
Through six months, Michigan online casino revenue has now reached $1.16 billion in 2024.
The previous six-month best was set in 2023 with $935 million in Michigan online casino revenue through June. This year, online casinos had already surpassed that with $976.6 million by the end of five months.
Here’s the total revenue at the six-month point since 2021:
- 2021 — $483 million
- 2022 — $757 million
- 2023 — $935 million
- 2024 — $1.16 billion
Michigan is averaging iGaming revenue of $193.3 million monthly in 2024.
PlayMichigan is now projecting online casinos will set a yearly record with more than $2.32 billion for the complete year. In all of 2023, online casino revenue was $1.92 billion.
June numbers up 21% year-over-year
While the June revenue number was down 7.8% from May’s total of $198.6 million, keep in mind May was the second-best month in Michigan history.
Year-over-year, June’s total of $183.2 million was up 21.3% from the June of 2023 total of $151 million.
In 2022, online casino revenue dropped 4.6% from May ($127,385,503) to June ($121,507,586). Last year, revenue increased, marginally (0.3%) from May ($150,559,370) to June ($151,006,936).
The Great Lakes State has now hit online casino revenue of at least $175 million in eight straight months.
Apart from it being the halfway point of 2024, there were a number of other notable takeaways in the June numbers.
Takeaway #1: BetMGM tops FanDuel for second straight month
The battle between BetMGM and FanDuel is still intense.
A little more than $2.3 million in revenue separated the two in June, with BetMGM edging FanDuel $47.9 million to $45.6 million to take the monthly revenue crown.
BetMGM Casino Michigan had led the Great Lakes State market for 39 straight months ever since online casinos launched in January of 2021. However, that run came to an end in March after FanDuel surpassed it.
FanDuel Casino Michigan enjoyed the online casino crown for two months, but that short-lived run came to an end in May. In one of the closest finishes you’ll see, BetMGM produced revenue of $51.6 million to FanDuel’s $51.5 million.
It’s clear that BetMGM and FanDuel are two of the top Michigan online casinos. The battle for the top spot in the market is far from over.
Takeaway #2: DraftKings hits $1 billion in lifetime online casino revenue in MI
DraftKings Casino Michigan became the third operator in Michigan history to surpass $1 billion in lifetime online casino revenue thanks to $32.5 million in revenue in June.
The operator now sits at $1.02 billion lifetime. It joins BetMGM ($1.9 billion lifetime) and FanDuel ($1.15 billion lifetime) with revenue in excess of $1 billion.
PlayMichigan is predicting BetMGM will surpass $2 billion in either August or September.
In recent years, the gap between Michigan’s Big 3 operators as narrowed substantially.
DraftKings has solidified third place in Michigan behind the two market leaders. While that doesn’t appear to be in jeopardy, the operator reported its worst month of the year in June. Here’s DraftKings month-by-month results in 2024:
- January: $36.3 million
- February: $36.9 million
- March: $40.4 million
- April: $38.5 million
- May: $34.9 million
- June: $32.5 million
Takeaway #3: Michigan closing in on $6 billion in lifetime online casino revenue
Through June, Michigan now has total, lifetime, online casino revenue of $5.8 billion.
PlayMichigan is predicting revenue will exceed $6 billion in August, with an outside shot to hit the milestone in July.
Takeaway #4: Another wild month for Golden Nugget
Golden Nugget online casino Michigan has had a rollercoaster year in 2024. But the operator posted a super solid $8.66 million in June to follow up its 2024 record month of $8.7 million in May.
In May, Golden Nugget jumped from 11th place in revenue in April to sixth, leaping over the Hollywood Casino that is part of the ESPN BET app.
Until recently, Golden Nugget has been incredibly up-and-down, with the following monthly earnings:
- January: $6.8 million
- February: $4.6 million
- March: $7.7 million
- April: $2.9 million
- May: $8.7 million
- June: $8.66 million
