The largest tournament series in Michigan online poker history completed last night on PokerStars MI. The final events of the 120-tournament Michigan Spring Championship of Online Poker (MISCOOP) played out Monday night, and in the end, Michigan players won over $2.35 million during the 17-day series.
To be fair, the history of Michigan online poker is a short one, with PokerStars (the state’s first site) having only launched in late January. Still, the MISCOOP’s numbers are impressive, exceeding PokerStars MI’s previous record of $2.2 million won in the Michigan Championship of Online Poker (MICOOP) in Feb.-March.
Over 40,000 entries in 120 tourneys, Main Event awards $243K
The $2,356,657.40 in prize pools well exceeded the series’ overall total of $2 million in guarantees. There were just over 40,000 entries in the 120 tournaments, an average of about 336 per tournament.
That prize pool total was boosted considerably by the $300 buy-in Main Event (Event #36-H). The two-day no-limit hold’em tournament came with a $200,000 guarantee. There were 871 total entries in the Main Event, creating a series-high $243,880 prize pool. In the end player “Stozypokes” claimed the top prize (and second series win), earning just over $41,000 for the effort.
Like other “SCOOP” series on PokerStars, MISCOOP events each featured three distinct tiers with different buy-ins, “high,” “medium,” and “low.”
Both the “medium” and “low” Main Events had slight overlays. The $75 “Main Event – Mid” (Event #36-M) had 577 entries, just 10 shy of hitting the $40,000 guarantee. Meanwhile the $30 “Main Event – Mini” (Event #36-L) drew 709 entries and needed two dozen more to hit its $20,000 guarantee.
All told, 33 of the 120 tournaments had overlays, in most cases quite small compared to the size of the prize pools. The largest overlay was just over $4,100 in a $50 Sunday Warm-Up (Event #20-M). Overlays added up to a little more than $35,000, an average of around $1,000 per instance.
MISCOOP best in site history, challenges PASCOOP numbers
As noted, the $2.35 million awarded in MISCOOP topped the $2.2 million won in the 60-tournament MICOOP series earlier this year. That total also compares well to other tournament series, including other SCOOP series at PokerStars’ US sites.
The Pennsylvania Spring Championship of Online Poker (PASCOOP) in April-May featured an almost identical 120-tournament schedule that similarly promised $2 million in guarantees. There PokerStars PA players won $2.64 million over the course of the series.
Meanwhile the New Jersey Spring Championship of Online Poker (NJSCOOP) took place during the same May 8-24 period as MISCOOP. The NJSCOOP featured a different line-up of events, with 165 tournaments total and just over $1.2 million in guarantees.
After the final events completed last night, PokerStars NJ players had won about $1.36 million during NJSCOOP. More than 40% of the events (68 out of 165) had overlays.
The other online poker site in the state, BetMGM Poker Michigan, tried to compete with the final week of MISCOOP by staging the second running of its BetMGM Online Series. The fledgling site went live in late March, and for now at least remains a distant challenger to PokerStars MI’s dominance in the state.
Guarantees for the 10-tournament series that ran May 16-23 totaled $315,000. By the time the last events played out on Sunday, all but one of the tournaments ended up having overlays. In fact, the overlays added up to almost $65,000, nearly twice the total amount in overlays of MISCOOP.
In the end $316,400 was awarded, less than the $360,000 won in the first BetMGM Online Series in April.
