Fastest to $4 billion in online casino revenue

Michigan online casinos crossed the $4 billion mark for lifetime revenue in September.

This is thanks to the state recording $166.4 million in September revenue according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board. That is the second-greatest monthly total in its history.

September’s mark is a 9.3% increase from August’s $152.2 million and a 29.3% increase from September 2022’s $128.7 million.

September 2023 Michigan online casino revenue

Online casinos in Michigan continue to make big gains from a year ago with September surpassing last year’s mark by over $37 million.

  • Online casino revenue: $166.4 million, up 9.3% from August
  • August online casino tax payments: $31.3 million to state and $11.5 million to local entities
  • Top online casino app by revenue: BetMGM Michigan with $48.6 million

Three takeaways from September Michigan online casino report

Fastest to $4 billion in revenue

Michigan was the fastest to surpass $1 billion in tax revenue and it now is also the fastest to surpass $4 billion in lifetime online casino revenue.

With September’s numbers, Michigan is now up to $4.1 billion in lifetime revenue. It took the state 33 months to hit this latest mark.

The equates to an average of $124.3 million per month.

Michigan up 23% in revenue from 2022

Adding in September’s $166.4 million in revenue, Michigan is now just under $1.41 billion in revenue for 2023 through nine months.

That is 23% greater than the $1.14 billion the state sat at through nine months of 2022.

Michigan is already creeping in on passing all of 2022’s total revenue of $1.58 billion, which set a new record for yearly revenue.

Should Michigan continue to outpace last year at 23%, it would put the state at $1.95 billion for 2023.

It should be noted that the final quarter of 2022 saw a big uptick in online casino revenue. October ($141 million), November ($145.4 million) and December ($152.8 million) each set new monthly records in succession.

It would be hard to expect this year to continue to see 23% growth from those marks, but the 29% increase in September indicates that anything is possible.

Three operators set new revenue records

Three Michigan online casino operators put up a record monthly revenue mark in September.

DraftKings is having a big 2023, capped off with a record $37.1 million in revenue last month. That greatly surpassed its previous best of $31.6 million from March. It also is the first time DraftKings Casino Michigan has been No. 2 in the monthly revenue chase since August of 2022.

For the year, DraftKings is up to $260.9 million in revenue. That is 48% greater than the $176.3 million it had through nine months of 2022.

DraftKings’ success is even more surprising considering FanDuel again set a new top mark last month. FanDuel Casino Michigan had $35.2 million in revenue in September, surpassing its previous record of $34.2 million from March.

FanDuel is now up to $281.5 million in revenue for the year. That’s 56.8% greater than the $179.6 million it had at this time a year ago.

PointsBet, now “A Fanatics Experience” experienced a record-setting September. It recorded $1.9 million in revenue, topping its previous best of $1.7 million in March.

Like FanDuel and DraftKings, PointsBet has greatly outpaced 2022 for revenue. Through September, it is up to just under $13 million. That is a 96.4% increase from the $6.6 million it had at this point a year ago.
