Gun Lake Casino Michigan

Gun Lake Casino is a tribal casino located in Wayland, Michigan.

It is located off Exit 61 on US 131, halfway between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo.

The casino opened in 2011 and is owned and operated by the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians. It was initially managed by an affiliate of Las Vegas, Nevada-based Station Casinos and private investors from Michigan. However, the band took control when its management agreement with Station Casinos came to an end in 2018.

Gun Lake Casino features 156,000 square feet of gaming with more than 2,000 slot machines and 47 table games. There’s a high-limit room, a 300-seat buffet, a 225-seat cafe as well as lounges, bars and a popular live entertainment venue.

You must be at least 21 years of age to gamble at Gun Lake.

The Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians is also in the midst of a $100 million property expansion.

The plan is to add 72,000 square feet. That means 450 more slot machines, 12 new table games and a larger nonsmoking area.

The Stage 131 entertainment venue, bar and soon-to-be sportsbook will double in size with more seating, an outdoor patio area and dining service. The remodel will also include two new upscale restaurants. The expansion is projected to open in the summer of 2021.

In the meantime, Gun Lake Casino will be going online and converting part of its Stage 131 venue into the Stage 131 Sportsbook & Lounge at Gun Lake Casino.

The band has reportedly agreed with Pennsylvania’s Parx Casino to launch a retail sportsbook on the property and sportsbook and casino website and app across Michigan.

Parx Casino and partner GAN have previously launched online gambling and sports betting operations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Gun Lake Casino online gambling partnerships

In July 2019, Gun Lake Casino and Rush Street Interactive announced the launch of the Casino4Fun social casino and sportsbook website in Michigan.

Other Rush Street-affiliated casinos also employ the Casino4Fun platform.

Rush Street Interactive is the online gaming arm of Rush Street Gaming, the company behind:

  • Rivers Casino, Pittsburgh, PA
  • Rivers Casino, Philadelphia, PA
  • Rivers Casino, Des Plaines, Illinois
  • Rivers Casino & Resort, Schenectady, NY

Rush Street launched its first real-money online gaming site, PlaySugarHouse.com NJ, in September 2016. In 2018, it became the first online operator in the US to offer a fully integrated sportsbook and casino.

Rush Street Interactive is also the service provider at retail sportsbooks at Rivers Casino Pittsburgh and the former SugarHouse Casino in Philadelphia, now Rivers Casino Philadelphia.

In addition, it launched Pennsylvania’s first online sportsbook, PlaySugarHouse.com, from that property in 2019. Rush Street then launched a second online sportsbook, BetRivers.com, the same year.

Retail sportsbook operations also launched at Rivers Casino and Resort in Schenectady in 2019.

The Gun Lake Casino4Fun site allows visitors to play online slots, table games, live dealer games and place bets in a sportsbook for free.

It is considered a marketing tool and does not include any real-money gaming capabilities.

Rush Street says it can help “convert play-for-fun social players into play-for-real money patrons should online gaming become legalized in their state.”

However, no real-money gaming agreement has been signed between Gun Lake and Rush Street since Michigan sports betting and online gambling bills became law.

Area press clippings indicate that Gun Lake management has agreed with Rush Street’s Pennsylvania competitor, Parx Casino, to launch a retail sportsbook on the property and a sportsbook and casino website and app in Michigan this year.

Parx Casino and online gaming software partner GAN have previously launched online gambling and sports betting operations in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Gun Lake Casino history

Gun Lake Casino opened in February 2011 despite construction delays. It was due to the legal battle surrounding the federal government’s decision to give the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians the land to build it on.

Lawsuits caused the delays, but after the casino opened, the casino never closed. In 2018, the last of any legal actions were dismissed.

The original casino featured more than 1,600 slot machines, 33 table games, a food court and a 225-seat cafe, along with a handful of bars, lounges and a live entertainment venue.

In 2017, Gun Lake Casino finished a $76 million expansion, almost doubling its size. The remodel included a buffet, high-limit gaming room and the Stage 131 entertainment lounge.

Ultimately, 73,000 square feet of space was added to the existing 83,000-square-foot facility. The casino features 2,050 electronic game machines and 42 table games. Gun Lake also features an employee dining room and lounge.

Gun Lake Casino had been managed by an affiliate of Las Vegas, Nevada-based Station Casinos and private investors from Michigan since it opened. But in 2018, the band took over. Its management contract with Station Casinos had come to an end.

In 2019, Gun Lake Casino announced plans to add another 72,000 square feet to the existing 156,000-square-foot facility. The expansion will include the addition of another 450 slot machines, 12 table games and a larger nonsmoking area.

Stage 131 will double in size with more seating, an outdoor patio area and dining service, including upscale restaurants. The expansion should be finished by the summer of 2021.

In the meantime, Gun Lake Casino is converting at least part of Stage 131 into the Stage 131 Sportsbook & Lounge at Gun Lake Casino.

The band has also reportedly entered into an agreement with Pennsylvania’s Parx Casino to provide it with retail sportsbook operations on the property and an online and mobile sportsbook and online casino in Michigan.

Parx Casino and software partner GAN have previously launched online gambling operations in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
