Meet the Team
We are a team of industry veterans and professional journalists with dozens of years of experience. Our staff regularly provides analysis and commentary on the booming Michigan legal gambling industry for a variety of local and national media outlets. When we’re not creating content, you can find us playing games, placing bets, exploring apps, and talking to Michigan players.
Content Lead: Tyler Andrews
Tyler Andrews is the Director of Content Strategy for all regional Catena Media sites, including PlayMichigan. He has also covered gaming expansion in North Carolina, Texas, Massachusetts, Ohio, Georgia, Maryland, and California. Tyler currently focuses on delivering authentic and helpful gaming content to Michigan players.
Head Writer: Corey Sharp
Corey Sharp joined Catena Media in 2022 and is the go-to expert for Michigan gambling. Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, he previously worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer and NBC Sports Philadelphia as a sports journalist and content producer. Corey graduated from Holy Family University in Philadelphia with a bachelor’s degree in sports management.
Content Editor: Martin F. Harris
Martin F. Harris is a writer and teacher who has reported on poker, online gambling, and sports betting since the mid-2000s. Once a full-time academic (Ph.D., English), he currently teaches part-time in the American Studies program at UNC Charlotte. In 2019, his book Poker & Pop Culture was published by D&B Books.

Dan Holmes is a Michigan resident who writes about sports betting, sports media, casino and sports betting legislative matters. He’s the author of three books, and previously reported for Major League Baseball as well as the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. He lives near Lake Michigan with his daughters.

Hill Kerby comes from a background of poker, sports and psychology. He brings all of these areas into his writing, where he feels fortunate to be able to create value in the growing, legal betting industry.

John Ferguson is the former content manager at PlayMI. John offers a diverse background working as a writer, editor and affiliate manager across every vertical of engaging player platforms from fantasy sports and sports betting to social casinos and iGaming. He brings first-hand experience working with some of the leaders in our industry.
Former Content Manager: Matt Schoch
A Michigan native, Matt Schoch has worked at newspapers in Michigan, Missouri, and the Virgin Islands. A versatile sports reporter, Matt has covered sailing on the Great Lakes, cricket in the Caribbean, high school and pro playoffs, and the Olympics in Rio. He’s also the host of the Locked On Pistons Podcast and producer of a documentary on Emoni Bates. A former blackjack dealer, Matt has studied the industry from all sides.
Formal Managing Editor: Dave Briggs
Before joining PlayMichigan, Briggs spent more than 25 years covering North American horse racing. He edited The Canadian Sportsman, covering the harness racing industry. He also spent more than five years as the editor of Canadian Thoroughbred magazine. He holds a master’s degree in journalism from Western University and was a 2018 inductee into the Communicators’ Corner of the US Harness Racing Hall of Fame. He has won 26 national writing awards for his coverage of the horse racing industry.
Former Managing Editor: Steve Schult
Steve Schult covered high-stakes poker tournaments for some of the game’s biggest outlets before serving as managing editor of PlayMichigan where he helped report on Michigan’s booming sports betting, online casino, and online poker industries.
Former Managing Editor: Drew Ellis
Drew Ellis has served as Lead Writer for PlayMichigan and remains a contributor. He has lived in Michigan his whole life, and has been writing professionally for the last 21 years. Ellis has covered anything from youth baseball in mid-Michigan, a top-25 college football program, and pro sports in the Detroit area. Always keeping busy, Ellis also has over 10 years of experience in covering sports betting, handling all major sports.
Former Lead Writer: Matt Kredell
Matthew has covered efforts to legalize and regulate online gambling since 2007. His reporting on the legalization of sports betting began in 2010 with an article for Playboy Magazine on how the NFL was pushing US money overseas by fighting the expansion of regulated sports betting. A USC journalism alum, Matt started his career as a sportswriter at the Los Angeles Daily News and has written on a variety of topics for Playboy, Men’s Journal, Los Angeles magazine, LA Weekly and ESPN.com.
Former Contributor: T.J. McBride
T.J. McBride is a writer and reporter based in Denver. He covers the gaming landscape across multiple states in addition to his main beat covering the NBA’s Denver Nuggets. His NBA Work can be found at several major media outlets including ESPN, FiveThirtyEight and Bleacher Report.
Former Contributor: Matthew Lomon
Matthew Lomon grew up surrounded by sports as a fan and participant. He played baseball at both the AAA and Elite levels, traveling across Canada and the United States. After his playing career, Matthew attended Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly known as Ryerson), graduating with distinction in the Spring of 2022 with a degree in Professional Communication.
