Disclaimer: This review is based on BetMGM’s online casino offering in New Jersey. It will be updated when the site launches in Michigan in 2021.
The BetMGM Sports Lounge at MGM Grand Detroit started taking bets on March 11, 2020.
On March 11, an MGM press release announced the launch of legalized sports betting at MGM Grand Detroit. The same announcement stated that online and mobile sports betting and online casino products are expected to launch at a later date, subject to regulatory approvals.
Michigan regulators have estimated the rules to govern online casinos and online and mobile sports betting will take about a year to develop. They are therefore targeting 2021 for the launch of the first Michigan online casinos and Michigan online sportsbooks.
At this point it’s almost a certainty that an integrated BetMGM online casino and online and mobile sports betting operation will be a big part of that launch when the time comes.

A similar welcome package should come alongside the launch of BetMGM in Michigan.
In New Jersey, the BetMGM online casino is currently home to the largest online slots jackpot in the country. It sits at over $3 million and can be hit playing any one of five linked progressive jackpot slots. These slots are:
BetMGM is currently running a Wi-Fi Wednesdays promotion in New Jersey, offering $10 in free play to those who opt in and wager $50 or more on slots or table games using a mobile device.
Plus, BetMGM NJ is running another promotion surrounding this year’s Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. The Masters Sweepstakes offers you the chance to win a trip to the Masters. Bettors received one entry for every $50 wagered on any slot or table game between March 1 and 15, with the lucky winner of a trip to the Masters to be drawn from those entrants.
You can expect similar promotions to run in Michigan when BetMGM launches.

Just as it did in New Jersey, BetMGM Michigan will launch with its own BetMGM iRewards Loyalty Program. The program will allow players to earn iRewards Points for each spin on a slot or bet on a table game.
However, iRewards Points can be redeemed for rewards at MGM properties across the US, just like MGM’s M life Rewards.
In fact, BetMGM iRewards Points can be redeemed three ways:
The iRewards program is a tiered loyalty program. The tiers are identical to the M life Rewards program tiers available at MGM brick and mortar casinos.
The more you play online, the quicker you collect iRewards Points and reach the next iRewards tier.
You earn one iRewards Point for every:
The program makes it easy to rack up points with increased volume on the site. The ability to use the points at MGM properties makes this one of the best loyalty programs in the online casino market.
The fact that iRewards Points can be redeemed for cash at increasingly better rates for higher tiers, and for purchases on the online store, enhances the program.
BetMGM runs on a GVC Holdings online casino software platform. It’s the same platform successfully employed by MGM’s Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa and its online gambling sites in New Jersey.
It features a downloadable desktop client available for direct download from the BetMGM main page.
It also includes a browser-based client you can access via most browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Apple Safari.
Finally, the BetMGM online casino is accessible through the BetMGM online casino mobile app available for Android and iOS devices. Unfortunately, the mobile app is a truncated version of the platform, offering access to a limited number of the casino’s slot game library. However, you can access registration and basic cashier functions on the app.
The BetMGM mobile app is a limited version of the online casino product.
However, it does provide mobile device access to some of BetMGM’s most popular games, even if they represent just a fraction of the more than 200 games available via the desktop and browser-based client.
Traditional casino games you’ll find on the BetMGM app include:
The BetMGM mobile app is stable connecting with Wi-Fi and 4G. There are minor lags, bugs and slow initializing times, but no more than the rest of the mobile casino app market.
In fact, the overall gaming experience is similar to what you can expect from other mobile apps on the market.
The BetMGM app delivers on the promise of mobile gaming. Despite its limits, it puts the infrastructure in place for future mobile gaming growth.
The BetMGM online casino app is available for Android and iOS devices.
The BetMGM online casino features close to 220 games. This includes as many as 200 slots and video poker titles, plus 20 table games.
The collection of slots is decent, even if it isn’t the biggest on the market. Plus, it includes progressive jackpot slots with growing jackpots.
The site’s table game selection is limited to:
BetMGM has three blackjack games:
BetMGM has two roulette games:
Video poker games available at BetMGM include:
BetMGM also has craps, Texas Hold ’em Bonus Poker and a keno-style game called Mega Ball.
BetMGM has 200 slots, and the number continues to go up with more titles added regularly.
Many of these slots are online versions of the same ones you can play at Michigan tribal casinos and Detroit commercial casinos, including MGM Grand Detroit.
Featured slots on BetMGM include:
Some of the jackpot slots on BetMGM include:
Like it does in New Jersey, BetMGM Michigan will feature a number of ways to get money on and off the site.
There is a $10 minimum deposit requirement using methods that include:
Instant e-checks and online banking transfers present the most reliable and affordable ways to fund your BetMGM account. Third-party payment processors like PayPal and Skrill also represent a viable alternative.
Visa and Mastercard are an option, too. However, credit card acceptance rates are mediocre, with some issuing banks still refusing to accept online gambling transactions despite the law.
Withdrawal options include:
As it is in New Jersey, BetMGM’s Michigan customer service will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by email and phone.
The BetMGM Michigan online casino website will also feature an online help section and FAQ that will help solve most common issues.
BetMGM is the marquee sports betting and online casino brand born out of a joint venture between MGM Resorts and GVC Holdings. It has exclusive access to MGM Resorts’ US land-based and online sports betting, plus online real-money and free-to-play casino gaming.
BetMGM has launched BetMGM Sports Lounges in MGM Resorts properties across the US, as well as online and mobile betting via the BetMGM sports app in New Jersey, West Virginia, Indiana and Nevada. In New Jersey, BetMGM also offers integrated online poker and online casino products along with online and mobile sports betting.
BetMGM online casino and online poker products first launched as PlayMGM sites in New Jersey in 2017. Sports betting came online in August 2018. A year later, in September 2019, the integrated online casino, poker and sports betting site and apps were rebranded with the BetMGM name.
In 1996, Michigan voters approved a proposal to establish three new commercial casinos in the city of Detroit.
The $235 million temporary MGM Grand Detroit casino officially opened on July 29, 1999, as the first of the three commercial casinos. The temporary home was inside a renovated Internal Revenue Service building in downtown Detroit. It featured two gaming floors with 2,300 slots and 80 table games.
In 2005, The Michigan Gaming Control Board approved MGM’s plan to build a $800 million, 100,000-square-foot permanent casino, 400-room hotel and eight-story self-parking garage just blocks away at John C. Lodge Freeway and Bagley Street.
The permanent MGM Grand Detroit opened on Oct. 2, 2007, becoming the first and only Detroit hotel and casino built from the ground up.
The property is still owned and operated by US hospitality and casino giant MGM Resorts International and a group of Detroit-based partners with a 2% stake.
MGM Grand Detroit sits on the edge of the city’s historic Corktown district in downtown Detroit. The 100,000-square-foot casino now features close to 3,500 gaming machines, 150 table games and a poker room.
There are two signature restaurants, three casual food outlets and a number of bars and entertainment options.
In 2019, MGM Grand Detroit opened the Moneyline Sports Lounge with plans to convert it into a sportsbook when Michigan legalized retail sports betting.
That happened in December 2019, and the Moneyline Sports Lounge became the BetMGM Sports Lounge in March 2020.
The fully functioning retail sportsbook features 60 wall-to-wall TVs for game viewing, capacity for 280 people and three sections filled with VIP seating. It is located beside the front entrance to the casino near the hotel lobby.
Betting windows and self-service betting kiosks are now live as well, allowing customers to bet on a wide variety of sports. The wraparound digital marquee has been converted from a schedule of games to an odds board.
Wagers can also be placed at BetMGM kiosks throughout MGM Grand Detroit.
In July 2018, MGM Resorts International announced it had entered into a joint venture with UK-based online gambling company GVC Holdings to create the BetMGM sports betting and online gambling platform in the US.
Therefore, Michigan online and mobile sports betting and online casino gaming will launch under the BetMGM brand once regulators have formulated rules to govern the activity across the state. That is expected to happen by 2021.
