Return to Player (RTP) percentage is the most important statistic in the online slot landscape. Put simply, it is the expected return on your money.

Knowing what RTP is and how it impacts you will improve your gambling experience.

The higher the RTP, the more money you’ll get back, on average. The typical payout for online slot machines is between 93%-97%. Thus, for every dollar bet, you can expect an average return between 93 and 97 cents.

Below, you will get a full overview of RTP and the best RTP slots at Michigan online casinos.

What is RTP for online slots?

RTP stands for Return To Player and represents the percentage of money bet on the game that will be paid out through wins over time. Each slot machine has a pre-set RTP percentage.

RTP percentages can vary, but most slots at Michigan online casinos sit around the 93-97% range. The higher the number, the better for the player, in general. For example, if you spend $100 on a slot with a 96% RTP, expectations would be to win back about $96 of that $100 wagered.

However, other factors come into play that prevent it from being a perfect science. The RTP represents the payback over the life of the game. So when someone wins big, that will balance out with another player(s) not having much success.

While a high RTP is good for players, it’s not a guarantee of immediate success.

That’s because you also have to consider volatility, which gets into the win frequency of the game. More about that below. It can be good to get started on higher RTP slots, which can be good for things like online casino bonuses.

How is RTP determined?

RTP is calculated by the total amount of money returned to players divided by the total amount wagered.

Remember that, though the RTP of slots is high, it can be misleading. Since slot payouts vary greatly, it increases the variance of your payouts. Over the long run, however, your return will equal the RTP. A lower slot RTP may have a bigger payout to pursue.

Some slots have ranging RTP based on bonus features and progressive jackpots. Divine Fortune is a good example. The listed RTP of 96.6% is only accurate if you take part in the progressive jackpot aspect of the game, which sometimes requires betting the max (depending on the game). If you’re not playing for the jackpot, the RTP falls to just 92.5%.

Knowing how your odds change, it may be in your best interest to pick a different game if you don’t plan on playing for the progressive jackpot. For more on progressive jackpots, see below.

What does volatility mean?

Low volatility slots have more frequent but smaller wins. The biggest prize available typically isn’t as large as it is in higher volatility games. However, there will be more, smaller victories.

Examples of low volatility slots include The Great Albini 2 (94.15% RTP) at BetMGM and Armadillo Goes West (94.46%) at DraftKings. You would expect to win more often playing these games, but, again, winning smaller amounts.

High volatility slots are the opposite. These games feature big prizes or even a progressive jackpot. However, wins of any kind tend to be few and far between. You can expect longer periods between wins, but those wins will be larger.

Examples of high-volatility games include Dead or Alive (96.8% RTP) and Cash Eruption (96% RTP). Both can be found at Golden Nugget Online Casino MI.

Many games have a medium volatility. These include Mercy of the Gods (96.6% RTP) and 88 Fortunes (96% RTP). You can play those at Caesars Palace Michigan.

Players seeking a big payout tend to go with high volatility slots. Players who want to play longer with their bankroll tend to play low-volatility slots. The following table gives you an idea of how games with similar RTP can vary drastically in volatility.

Progressive jackpots

Progressive jackpot slots are also popular in Michigan. In a progressive jackpot, a small amount of each wager you make is added to an overall jackpot prize for someone to eventually claim.

These fall into the high volatility category because with the potential for a huge payout come many spins that will yield little to no payout.

There are many different types of progressive jackpot slots, but all of them will clearly post the jackpot prize(s) currently available on the game. Make sure to read the rules carefully, as most will require a max bet to be eligible for the top progressive jackpot.

Some of the more popular progressive jackpot games include Divine Fortune, 5 Fortunes and Mercy of the Gods. Each has competitive RTP and at FanDuel MI, you can find progressive jackpot games labeled on their selection page.
