FastDraft has secured approval to operate fantasy contests in Michigan, but players in the state still cannot enter its paid competitions.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) approved FastDraft LLC’s operator license during its Aug. 4 public meeting, clearing a key hurdle for the company to join Michigan’s legal fantasy sports market.
However, FastDraft’s terms continue to include Michigan among 18 states excluded from paid-entry contests. The restriction remained in place as of Aug. 13, and FastDraft had not publicly announced a Michigan launch date.
Michigan still on FastDraft’s exclusion list
The MGCB’s Aug. 4 executive orders confirm that FastDraft has obtained the operator license required to offer fantasy contests in Michigan, but that does not necessarily mean a platform is ready to begin accepting paid entries immediately.
FastDraft did not respond to questions from PlayMichigan about when paid contests could become available in Michigan or whether any additional steps must be completed before launch.
The company’s terms and conditions state that users must be physically located outside its excluded states to enter paid competitions. Michigan appears on that excluded list alongside Pennsylvania, New York, Nevada and 14 other states.
The terms were last updated on June 6, 2025, more than a year before the company received its Michigan license, so the restriction may not reflect its current plans for the state.
Free-to-play competitions are handled separately, with availability varying based on the specific contest, prize, and sport. FastDraft’s terms therefore do not guarantee that every free offering is available in Michigan.
What FastDraft could offer Michigan players
FastDraft markets two primary formats through its platform: Speed Best Ball and Salary-Free DFS. The company says its faster drafts can be completed in 10 minutes or less, while its salary-free contests allow users to select players without staying under a traditional roster budget.
In best ball contests, players draft a roster but do not have to make weekly lineup decisions because FastDraft automatically counts their highest-scoring eligible players. In competitions such as its Origins tournament, rosters are locked after the draft, with no waivers, substitutions, or trades available during the contest period.
Some formats also feature Captain Boosters, which apply point multipliers to selected players and add another strategic decision after the draft. Turbo Mode serves as a multi-entry tool, allowing users to submit player rankings and request multiple automated drafts based on their preferences.
Those formats differ from the pick’em-style fantasy games Michigan regulators restricted in 2023. State rules prohibit licensed operators from offering contests that mimic sports betting or involve prop bets, while traditional salary-cap and season-long fantasy contests remain legal.
What the license means for Michigan players
Michigan participants must be at least 18 years old to enter fantasy contests, compared with the minimum age of 21 for online casino gaming and sports betting.
Licensed fantasy operators must comply with requirements intended to protect players and preserve contest integrity. As part of the licensing process, the MGCB reviews an applicant’s offerings to ensure they comply with the Fantasy Contests Consumer Protection Act and the state’s administrative rules.
FastDraft’s approval places the company under that regulatory framework, but it does not give Michigan players immediate access to paid contests. Until FastDraft removes the state from its excluded list and begins accepting entries, its new license will not change what is available to players.
