Island Resort & Casino will again bring a major college sports event to its Upper Peninsula property next month.
The seventh annual Island Resort Intercollegiate is scheduled for Sept. 6-7 at Sage Run Golf Course in Harris. Admission is free for the public. The NCAA Division I event is hosted by South Dakota State University.
Sage Run Event Brings 12 Division I Teams to Harris
The tournament will include three 18-hole rounds over two days, for a total of 54 holes. Practice rounds are set for Saturday, Sept. 5. The first two rounds begin Sept. 6. Tee times start around 7:30 a.m. Eastern time. The final round and awards ceremony are scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 7.
It will feature 12 teams, including Michigan, Marquette, defending champion West Virginia, Miami (Ohio), Central Florida, Ball State, Boise State, Virginia Commonwealth, St. Mary’s College, North Texas, Kansas City, and host South Dakota State.
Marquette is playing in the event for the first time.
Island Resort Highlights Golf Amenities Around the Tournament
Sage Run was designed by architect Paul Albanese. It plays at 7,309 yards as a par-72 course. It is located about eight miles west of the Island Resort & Casino. The main entrance is accessible off U.S. 2/U.S. 41, about a mile west of the main resort complex.
The Island Resort property also includes Sweetgrass and Cedar. Cedar is a nine-hole course that opened in recent weeks. A grand opening celebration is planned for 2027.
Island Resort general manager Tony Mancilla said in the event announcement,
“We’re proud to reach the seventh year of this tournament.”
He also noted that an expanded Starter Shack will give spectators a place to buy food and beverages during the event.
The Intercollegiate began in 2019. Perkins native and Mid Peninsula High School graduate Casey Van Damme started the event. Van Damme was South Dakota State’s director of golf at the time. The inaugural individual champion was Michigan State’s James Piot. Piot later won the U.S. Amateur in 2021.
