Kewadin Casinos is embarking on a new round of property improvements that will bring a waterpark, expanded RV accommodations and hotel upgrades to several of its Michigan gaming properties over the next two years.
The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians announced Phase Four of its ongoing renovation strategy this week, outlining projects at Kewadin Casino properties in Sault Ste. Marie, St. Ignace, Manistique, Christmas, and Hessel.
The improvements are scheduled to roll out between summer 2026 and summer 2027.
Waterpark planned for flagship Sault Ste. Marie casino
The most notable addition is a new indoor waterpark and sports bar planned for Kewadin Casino Sault Ste. Marie.
The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027 and would create the only waterpark in Michigan’s eastern Upper Peninsula, according to the tribe.
Kewadin Casinos CEO Allen Kerridge said the upgrades reflect changing customer expectations and are intended to broaden the property’s appeal beyond traditional casino visitors.
“We understand that the needs of our guests have evolved over the years, and we are excited for the opportunity to evolve with them.
“These renovations are designed to enhance the guest experience in the areas guests value most, whether it is a family traveling to camp or a local resident looking for a great meal and a fun night out.”
RV park expansions part of tourism strategy
Several of the projects focus on outdoor recreation and tourism.
A new RV park is scheduled to open at Kewadin Casino Manistique in summer 2026. The property’s existing RV park in Christmas will receive upgrades during the same timeframe.
Another RV park is planned for Kewadin Casino St. Ignace, with construction expected to be completed in spring 2027.
The investments come as many operators continue looking for ways to attract visitors through amenities beyond gaming, Kerridge said.
“This next phase will allow us to better meet those needs by enhancing our RV park offerings, improving our hotel at Kewadin Casino St. Ignace, and bringing more family-friendly experiences to Kewadin Casino Sault Ste. Marie.”
Improvements planned at multiple casino properties
Additional renovations include hotel room upgrades at Kewadin Casino St. Ignace, scheduled for completion in fall 2026.
Kewadin Casino Hessel is also set to receive renovations to its bar and deli later this year.
The projects represent the latest phase of a multi-year modernization effort across the tribe’s gaming portfolio. Earlier phases included exterior improvements, updated guest accommodations, and infrastructure upgrades at several properties.
Kewadin operates five casinos throughout Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and is owned and operated by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
Tribal officials said the latest investments are designed to strengthen the properties’ long-term competitiveness while creating new attractions for visitors to the region.
The tribe overcame a series of cyberattacks to its locations in February 2025.
