MGM Grand has completed a major lighting retrofit. The project swapped more than 500 exterior fixtures for 151 LEDs. The change reportedly cut power use by about 73% for MGM Grand Casino.
Las Vegas-based LED Connection handled the project after the original manufacturer of MGM Grand’s signature green lights stopped making them. According to the report, other companies had failed to find an LED solution before LED Connection took on the job.
MGM Grand Retrofit Is Part of a Broader MGM Efficiency Push
The project fits into broader energy-efficiency work across MGM Resorts properties. MGM Resorts has replaced more than 1.4 million light fixtures with LED technology across its portfolio.
The source report also cited the U.S. Department of Energy. The agency said MGM Resorts reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 41% between 2019 and 2022.
Beyond lighting, MGM signed a 25-year power purchase agreement in 2024 for the Escape Solar and Storage Project. Its 100-megawatt Mega Solar Array also currently generates up to 100% of daytime energy needs for its 13 Strip properties, according to the report.
LED Upgrades Are Spreading Across Major Casino Properties
LED Connection has worked on several other high-profile casino projects. Those include runner beams for the Luxor Pyramid and LED replacements for gold neon at Mandalay Bay and the W, formerly the Delano. The Mandalay Bay job required almost a million feet of cabling, the report said.
Outside Las Vegas, the company also completed a project at Borgata in Atlantic City. It gave the casino exterior a purple LED-neon appearance the company calls “LED Neon.”
Hoodline also placed the project in a wider Nevada energy context. Nevada Senate Bill 358 requires electric service providers to source at least 50% of electricity from clean, renewable sources by 2030 and 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050. The report also noted that NV Energy’s Business Energy Services program offers commercial lighting rebates covering 50% to 70% of project costs for LED retrofits.
The source did not report the total cost of the MGM Grand retrofit or its annual dollar savings.
