DraftKings Michigan awarded the largest online casino jackpot in US history this week to an anonymous state resident. The prize was worth $9.28 million, according to the gaming company, and was won on Wednesday.
The win came on a $0.20 play on Irish Pot Luck as part of a progressive jackpot that had been building over a year from DraftKings. What started as $1 million in February 2024 grew to the largest online casino jackpot in the country’s history on Wednesday.
Jason March, Vice President of iGaming Marketing and Operations at DraftKings commented on the historic win in a press release:
“It’s been exciting to watch this historic jackpot climb to a record-breaking $9.28 million, giving a DraftKings Casino customer in Michigan an incredible, life-changing experience while engaging with our product.
“To be able to award the largest online casino jackpot in U.S. history is an amazing testament to the DraftKings Casino team who work tirelessly to deliver customers a best-in-class experience. Congratulations to the winner, we look forward to celebrating our next big jackpot win.”
The previous US record for an online jackpot was $6.45 million, which was won in August 2024 in New Jersey.
Single Level Progressive Jackpot Delivers Huge Jackpot
For another company to eclipse the record-setting jackpot, they would have to gather a prize that competes with the DraftKings Casino’s proprietary “Single Level Progressive Jackpot.”
Customers who use DraftKings to play online slots and other casino games can choose to tack on a wager to enter one of many jackpot games with a progressive pot. Games like DraftKings Blackjack and others, allow consumers to toss in as little as $0.20 to get a chance to win some or all of the prize. If no one wins, the prize grows and grows based on how many people enter, and how much they make as the side wager.
For this particular progressive jackpot, over 20 games were available to participate. That included:
- Selected slots
- Roulette
- DraftKings Baccarat
- DraftKings Blackjack
- DraftKings Bingo Blackjack
During the last year, DraftKings let its players see the jackpot’s growth in real time. Tracking of the data by PlayMichigan revealed that it typically grew by around $15 per minute as a round-the-clock average. That made for over $20,000 added to the jackpot each day on average. However, the pace was slowest in the early morning and higher in the evening.
There was no cap available for the jackpot, so it could have kept growing and growing until someone won.
Michigan is one of five states where DraftKings Casino operates, in addition to the Canadian province of Ontario. According to DraftKings, the operator has awarded 60 single-level jackpots of at least $1 million.
