If you have ever been on social media after a tough Michigan State game, you know the vibes can get pretty ugly. Fans sometimes forget that the people on the field are actually human beings.
And that’s why BETMGM Sportsbook has created an Athlete Anti-harassment Policy. The company is making it clear that if you can’t play nice, you can’t play at all.
Rhea Loney, BetMGM’s chief compliance officer, said athlete safety is the sportsbook’s top priority.
“We are unwavering in our commitment to sports integrity – and that commitment extends to safeguarding athletes, coaches, and league personnel. Our legal, regulated environment enables us to identify misconduct, investigate reports, and take action when necessary. Any confirmed instance of harassment will result in decisive measures, including account suspension.”
BetMGM to work closely with Michigan regulators
You might wonder how a sportsbook can catch someone being a jerk on social media.
BetMGM has updated its terms of service to explicitly ban any kind of harassment or abusive language directed at athletes, coaches, or even league officials.
If you get caught sliding into a player’s DMs with threats or insults because of a lost parlay, you are looking at a permanent ban. BetMGM works closely with Michigan state regulators and even law enforcement to investigate reports of misconduct.
Barry Sanders takes a stand
Detroit Lions legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders, who also serves as a BetMGM ambassador, is spearheading this initiative.
Barry knows a thing or two about the pressure of the spotlight, so he joined the conversation to remind everyone that respect is the heart of the game.
He knows that the passion of Michigan fans is what makes our sports scene great, but there is a clear line between cheering and harassment that should never be crossed.
Big win for Michigan athletes
This policy is a big deal for the college scene here in the Mitten. Think back to the 2024 rivalry game where Michigan edged out State 24 to 17. When a game is that close, every single play is under a microscope.
Michigan remains one of the few states that still allows college prop betting, which means you can wager on specific stats like how many yards a Spartan quarterback might throw for or how many catches a Wolverine tight end might get.
While it adds more fun to a Saturday afternoon, it also puts a target on the backs of college kids in Ann Arbor or East Lansing when they don’t hit their “overs.”
Loney made it clear that this zero-tolerance rule covers everyone from pro stars to amateur athletes.
