The Michigan Gaming Control Board has taken harsh stands when it comes to illegal gambling. Chief of Staff Kurt Steinkamp believes the MCGB has found some success in eradicating unlicensed operators.
Michigan might be the most aggressive regulator in the US, in terms of protecting legal online casinos, online sportsbooks and residents of the state.
During the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) in Las Vegas, Steinkamp detailed the process the MGCB uses to eliminate illegal gambling, and why it works.
Publicity helps
The MGCB sent its first cease-and-desist letter to Bovada, a well-known offshore sports wagering site, in May 2024. The operator ended up complying with the order the next month.
The MGCB sent another 15 letters last year and 155 more this year. The last six happened late in September.
According to CDC Gaming, Steinkamp pointed to the MCGB’s transparency at the Expo as a key reason for its success.
“The reason that we’re succeeding is that we’re very public about it. The state not only issues a press release along with each letter, it maintains a public list of the offending companies.”
Steinkamp added that it is approaching 50% compliance rate. He added that the MCGB needs to “attack the infrastructure,” whether that be data providers, game supplies, or ISPs.
MGCB applauds Whitmer
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the Fiscal Year 2026 budget bills into law earlier this week. That got a stamp of approval from MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams.
Williams spoke about the budget protecting Michiganders from unlawful gambling.
“The Michigan Gaming Control Board commends Gov. Whitmer and the Legislature for enacting a responsible, forward-looking state budget that prioritizes the safety and well-being of our citizens. This budget reinforces the state’s commitment to protecting Michiganders through strong regulatory oversight, promoting integrity in gaming, and ensuring our agency has the resources needed to uphold public trust.
“We remain steadfast in our mission to safeguard consumers, combat illegal gaming, and collaborate with law enforcement and industry partners to maintain fair and secure gambling environments statewide. The investments made through this budget will allow us to continue serving Michigan with transparency, accountability, and vigilance.”
We can expect the MGCB to remain steadfast when it comes to pursuing illegal gambling operators.
