The Michigan Gaming Control Board is expanding its responsible gambling efforts through a new partnership with gambling-blocking software provider Gamban, offering free licenses to all state residents.

Announced last week, the initiative allows anyone in Michigan to access Gamban’s software at no cost, with license options ranging from one to five years. The program is designed to give players a practical tool to limit or completely block access to online gambling platforms.

Gamban is a device-level application that prevents access to gambling websites and apps across major platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows and macOS. Once installed, it is designed to be difficult to remove, creating a barrier for users trying to avoid gambling.

Free tool available to all Michigan residents

Importantly, the free licenses are available to all residents, not just those enrolled in the state’s self-exclusion programs. However, the MGCB is encouraging individuals already on the Disassociated Persons List or the online Responsible Gaming Database to use Gamban as an additional layer of protection.

MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said in the release:

“Michigan is committed to ensuring that the expansion of legal gaming comes with the strongest possible safeguards for our residents.

“Our partnership with Gamban gives anyone who wants help a free, proven tool to block access to online gambling – instantly and across all their devices.”

Residents can claim a free license through the MGCB website, create an account, and install the software across unlimited personal devices.

Gamban blocks broad range of gambling content

The software blocks a wide range of gambling content, including online casinos, sports betting, poker, social casinos, and even crypto- and NFT-based wagering. It also restricts access to unregulated offshore sites, which often lack consumer protections.

That broader coverage is a key part of the MGCB’s strategy. In recent months, the regulator has ramped up enforcement against illegal operators, issuing cease-and-desist orders to 45 offshore sites targeting Michigan players.

By pairing enforcement with prevention tools like Gamban, the state is aiming for a more comprehensive approach to responsible gaming.

Part of larger responsible gaming push

The move comes as Michigan continues to see strong growth in online gaming and sports wagering. It has prompted regulators to emphasize consumer protection and harm reduction.

According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, about 2% of US adults meet the criteria for gambling addiction. It underscores the importance of accessible support tools.

Gamban representatives say removing cost barriers can make a meaningful difference for those seeking help. Matt Zarb-Cousin, Gamban’s director of external affairs, added:

“When someone takes the first step toward quitting gambling, they will be made aware of all the services available in the state via the Gamban app.”

The partnership adds to Michigan’s broader responsible gaming framework. It includes self-exclusion programs and public awareness campaigns such as “Don’t Regret the Bet,” which has received national attention. Together, these tools are intended to provide support at multiple stages.

For those in need of help, the state also continues to promote the 1-800-GAMBLER helpline. The resource offers free, confidential support 24/7.
