The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is expanding its responsible gambling outreach with a new program that partners with high school sports booster clubs across the state.

The initiative, announced this week, invites booster clubs to help promote the state’s “Don’t Regret the Bet” responsible gambling campaign while raising funds for school athletic programs.

Participating organizations can earn up to $4,000 by displaying responsible gaming messaging at sporting events. It also includes their community outreach channels.

MGCB officials say the effort aims to counter the increasing amount of gambling content young people encounter through sports broadcasts, social media, and other digital platforms.

Program connects RG message with school sports

Under the program, eligible booster clubs will receive marketing materials tied to the Don’t Regret the Bet campaign.

Those materials can be promoted in several ways, including:

  • Social media posts
  • Game-day programs
  • Scoreboard and stadium signage
  • Email newsletters
  • Community events and fundraising activities

The MGCB said the initiative allows booster clubs to support school athletics. They are also helping educate families and students about responsible gambling.

Executive Director Henry Williams said booster clubs are well-positioned to deliver the message.

“Responsible gaming education isn’t just good practice – it’s critical for protecting Michigan’s youth in an era where betting content is everywhere.”

Williams added that booster clubs are “deeply trusted in their communities.” They are effective partners in raising awareness about gambling risks.

Addressing youth exposure to gambling

The MGCB said the program responds to growing concerns about young people’s exposure to gambling content as sports wagering becomes more prominent nationwide.

Research cited by the agency found one in six parents of teens worry their child may be developing a gambling problem. It highlights the importance of early education and prevention.

By integrating responsible gambling messaging into high school sports environments, regulators hope to start conversations about gambling risks earlier and encourage healthier decision-making.

The booster club initiative is the latest expansion of Michigan’s Don’t Regret the Bet campaign. It offers educational resources and tools designed to help residents recognize and prevent problem gambling.

The campaign was recognized nationally in 2025, which included a finalist honor in two categories of the PRNEWS Platinum Awards. It’s one of the highest honors in public relations and communications.

Applications now available

Applications for the program are currently open and will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

To qualify, organizations must be school-affiliated, nonprofit booster clubs and agree to display approved campaign messaging during athletic events and other promotional activities.

MGCB officials say the partnership allows schools to raise funds. In addition, schools are also supporting the state’s broader effort to promote responsible gambling.
