Michigan sportsbooks ended the year on quite a high, posting record handle and revenue totals in 2025, along with a solid December.

Operators finished the year with $5.54 billion in handle and $685.6 million in revenue. In December, the market generated $525.2 million and $85.8 million in the same categories.

The vertical certainly made strides in terms of revenue. However, despite the record, handle remained relatively flat from 2024.

December sports betting by the numbers

  • Handle: $525.2 million ($513.0 million online)
  • Revenue: $85.8 million ($84.0 million online)
  • Hold: 16.4%
  • Month-over-month: Total handle decreased 18.6%
  • Sports betting taxes: $5.8 million to state and local coffers
  • Top online sports betting app by handle: FanDuel Sportsbook with $187.0 million
  • Top online sports betting app by revenue: FanDuel with $35.1 million

Revenue surges and handle remains flat

The previous highs in handle and revenue came in 2024 as operators recorded $5.51 billion and $470.3 million, respectively. Handle increased by only 0.5% in 2025 while revenue skyrocketed 45.8%.

While bettors did not necessarily bet more, operators certainly got the better of customers last year. Hold percentage in 2025 was 12.4% compared to 8.5% in 2024.

In December alone, operators experienced a 16.3% hold rate. On the flip side, December’s handle rate fell 18.6% from November and 14.9% year-over-year.

The month-over-month drop was much larger in 2025 than it was in 2024, which was only 8%. It’ll be interesting to see if this trend continues in 2026.

In the meantime, as football winds down, handle numbers are expected to drop even more.

New operator makes waves

Hard Rock Sportsbook debuted in December and is already making inroads in the market. The operator finished sixth in handle at $24.1 million, more than $1 million shy of theScore Bet.

Hard Rock launched both platforms and came in hot as an established gambling brand with both an online and retail presence in New Jersey. The operator should have no problem blending into the Michigan market.

TheScore Bet also made its debut after rebranding from ESPN BET last month. It’s likely these two operators are going to battle it out to start 2026.
